During my groups search into the Social Media presence of Axe Deodorant vs Old Spice deodorant, we were able to see that Old Spice carried a higher sentiment among the population than Axe does.  Looking at many twitter posts and different outlets where consumers were able to speak about the product, we find that it is mostly a joke.  They make fun of friends that use Axe or someone they may see or smell, and this is a main topic of conversation.

Old Spice on the other hand has more of a following due to its advertising and people seem to like the product more.  The Old Spice ads which are hilarious generate a lot of buzz and consumers tend to talk about them a while after the advertisement has aired or gone public.  The spokesperson for Old Spice also generates a lot of buzz.  As for the product itself, many users lover the product and express this sentiment, while a smaller segment has a dislike of it.

In the end Axe trails Old Spice in the social media platform and will need to work hard in the future to be looked at more than just a joke.  Old Spice has embraced the funny nature of the commercials and even has come up with innovative products to generate more buzz such as the Old Spice Bear.  This is no more than a deodorant holder, which is completely useless.  Axe will need to revamp its image away from current ways, and be easier for users to enjoy.

Looking at Best Buy’s social media strategy, I have looked at a few different areas.  First off, I took a look at what was going on in the world of Facebook.  On Facebook, Best Buy really goes after engagement of the customers.  Constantly asking questions such as “How do you use your laptop; at home or more on the go?”.  They are trying to identify who their customer is, and what they like.  Other questions such as “Favorite Steven Spielberg Movie?”, are used more for keeping the user engaged and active on their page.  Best Buy also does some other interesting things to actively engage users in other ways.  This happens in such ways as ePrinting your Christmas wishlist, sending a holiday card with “Gifts of Holiday Past”, Hi-Def Holiday videos, and Farmville Collectibles.  The Gifts of Holiday past is very creative, where you pick a picture, which could be someone talking in a very early brick style cell phone, then paste your photo in the face.   Best Buy on Facebook also includes product selections, location information, and events that Best Buy may be hosting in the near future.

Best Buy on twitter “promises to give you the latest and greatest from Best Buy, including updates from employees, deals, event notices, and more…check it out!”.  Twitter for Best Buy is mainly used for deals and promotion information rather more engagement such as Facebook was used.

The most suprising thing about Best Buy is their other social media areas such as Best Buy Community, Best Buy Connect, and Best Buy IdeaX.  Best Buy Community (connect) is forum where customers can talk about specific products or product lines, rate them, and really get a feel for what other Best Buy customers think.  This is also a place where people can go to get technical support or some how to information.  This community even has  Twelpforce, which is a combination twitter and forum help force for customers.  These customer can ask questions about financing, promotions, and any topic that relates to Best Buy.  Best Buy Connect is part of this Twelpforce, where the questions are answered in real time by Best Buy employees.  Best Buy has enough trust in their employees to put the employees tweets on the companies page.

Best Buy IdeaX, is a way of sharing ideas (create) with Best Buy and their community, as well as sharing dislikes.  After you have uploaded an idea, other users get to vote on them, and important topics get feedback on the Best Buy blog.  This also includes what Best Buy is doing wrong, one topic that stood out was “You new commercial is horrible”.  I think that this idea is useful, and creative, although it may be lacking in some direction.  This site unless you look around for information, you may not know what the site is all about.  You can share an idea very easily, but understanding the end result could be better displayed.

If privacy is not dead, it is certainly dying.  That is if you want some sort of a normal life, if not the other choice is to stay off of the Internet and not be tracked.   That choice seems to be a little crazy if we take a look at our lives.  I cannot remember a day when I did not have some use on the Internet.  I am connected by laptop, phone, gaming systems, and school computers, it would be tough to completely disconnect from it all.  The Wall Street Journal article entitled The Web’s New Gold Mine: Your Secrets written by Julia Angwin, discusses in depth how far these pieces of tracking software go.

I do not think that most of us understand how much tracking software follows us on a daily basis.  According to the article the top 50 website’s that Americans visit install around 64 trackers on average.  This is what is most startling, the amount of trackers and how in depth they go.  These trackers have now become so advanced they can look at where our mouse is going as we view a web page.  No one signed up to be tracked, it was no one’s intention by viewing a web page to be tracked and logged into a database by a number.  This information is invaluable for a marketer, but as a consumer this may be going overboard.

If we do not want to disconnect from the internet, the other choice would be to delete the cookies and other tracking software installed on our computers, the problem is that files that have been cleared can re-install themselves.  This makes the process useless.  As this goes with tracking software, it should be illegal.  There are no two ways about it, this practice should be outlawed in government.  At some point I think consumers will push lawmakers to go after these tracking companies and create a “Do Not Track” list, or have some laws in effect which can regulate the companies to give Americans their privacy back.  The only problem with this is that most people do not know about the trackers.

I took a look at Yahoo’s Ad Interest Manager, and saw myself in their system.  It is correct, I am Male, 26-34, and living in Illinois.  As I looked onto which pages I click on and visit, they are correct also.  They have also lumped my searches into categories, some I can remember and some I cannot, this is the advantage they have, by using a computer to record it all.  I see this not as bad as some of the tracker that I probably have on my computer, since these topics were all taken from Yahoo itself and I use this site regularly.  This information does not seem to be too invasive.  More invasive types of trackers is what I and I think most others have the problem with.  Privacy is definitely dying and it is due to the tracking software that we have allowed be installed on our computers unwittingly.  We will see in the future if this brings about any long term problems for us.

There have been a total of 83 unique visits to my site, from which 25 were unique visitors.  These visitors have viewed 179 pages, and averaged just under 6 minutes on the site.  53% of these visitors have bounced right away.  My visitors come mainly from the United States, although I have some other visitors as well.  They have come from Spain, Netherlands, France, UK, Canada, Indonesia, and Egypt. My visitors generally have landed mostly on my homepage, visiting mostly that page, then viewing the about page, contact page, and resume page.

Most of my visitors are coming from direct sources, but I also receive traffic from referring sites (laurenlabrecque.com), search engines (google organic), and an other source which is rss.  Top keywords that visitors get to my site by include (not provided),  Adidas fonts, medium Adidas fonts for free, and showcase 1.0.17.  The information from my site suprises me slightly.  I did not expect to have visitors from other country, or the keywords to be used to get to my site.  The rest of the information seems pretty normal and does not surprise me.

Great Fortune Cookies

www.fancyfortunecookies.com

Buy Great Fortune Cookies that Have Been

Personalized and can be Delivered Anywhere!

My ad choice was to go after the demographic looking for great fortune cookies either by taster or look.  These customers would most likely be gift givers, looking to surprise a friend or loved one with a personalized fortune cookie.  The call to action is for customers to buy these and have them delivered.  This mostly sums up the website pretty accurately, so it is relevant.

Currently for Great Fortune Cookies there is low competition with 1,000 monthly searches.  Looking at the other suggested keywords 2 that look like they might work include fortunecookie – 135,000 searches with low competition and fortune cookie company – low competition with 2,900 monthly searches.

Using the traffic estimator tool, I started with $1 and found that no one was bidding on this, so this tool could not really be used.  Using a different keyword, fortunecookie, to get into the #1 ad position, a CPC bid price of $3.80 would be used.  The estimated CPC however is only $1.10 and the estimated daily cost would be $.50.

Search Engine Optimization is defined – “All the techniques used to cause a Web page to be highly ranked on one or more search engines”  (Roberts 2008).  This is important because when you want your pages to be seen, being highly ranked is very important to being seen.  Increasing traffic to your site can increase sales if you are selling a product, which is what business is all about.  There are billions of web pages, without having SEO, it would be extremely hard to differentiate site from each other.

After running my blog through the keyword density tool, I found that my main keywords are form, market, plugin, marketing, business, and company.  These results are not totally surprising, I recall using many of these in my posts.  Form however is not a keyword that I remember using as much as it has been used.

I have created an ad for the Humane Haven Animal Shelter in Bolingbrook, IL.  The focus of the ad is to build interest and inform about adopting dogs.  The A/B Split testing which will be conducted uses 2 different dogs in the ads.  One ad shows a brown terrier while the other shows a black lab.  The ad also features a different phone number in the ads to record which ad gains more interest.  The ad copy informs that there are dogs to be adopted, as well as the place and time, to see them.  In the call to action, the consumer can either show at an adoption time or call in.  The landing page which was chosen was the dogs for adoption page, this page shows which dogs are currently ready to be adopted.  I felt that this was most relevant since consumers would want to adopt a dog.  Metrics that would be used to test the ad would include click through rate, and conversion rate between how many ads were sent out or seen versus how many actually inquired.  Then using how many inquired versus how many adopted.  The ad is the medium rectangle shape at 300×250.

Guest speaker Ryan Eugene, of itSupplies, gave insight into the history of itSupplies, as well as some key trends in the internet marketing realm, and a view of his specific job at the company.  As a recent graduate from Northern Illinois University himself, it was very informational into the different types of jobs open to us.

itSupplies, began in 1998 with founder Greg Lahart, with the first focus as to hold as little inventory as possible.  Greg selling equipment out of his garage, had used catalog’s as a main sales channel, with customers being able to order by phone.  This model that Greg used was a merchant business model, since he was selling the products directly to consumers.  As demand began to increase itSupplies changed to more of a web-based platform selling tool, continuing on with the merchant model, as they do today.  Using the website at first was mostly a fullfilment tool, but soon they expanded adding thousands of products.  itSupplies also saw the need to have a large web presence due to the growing e-commerce market.

Ryan being the webmaster of itSupplies, understands the need for SEO.  With his discussion into itSupplies, he dived right into the SEO world explaining the need for unique content.  This was shown in the company website with the content pages, with the explanation that if you just take information from a manufacturer’s site, your site will be “buried” in searches.  Utilizing key words is another important aspect Ryan explained in the SEO topic.  One way itSupplies increased their SEO rank was to start a blog, increasing the unique content associated with the company had a positive impact.

Where the web wins, was another topic in the discussion with Ryan.  Ryan spoke of having new customers on the global scale.  Having this ability can grow your company a tremendous amount.  Also using the web is less costly than using lists (direct marketing).  Another area where the web wins is that analytics allow for easy assessments of conversion rates.  Having these statistics can show your company the trends and what is working, so targeting and tailoring is easy.  The final points in Ryan’s discussion were two specific things – keeping up with technology, and understanding data flow.  Not being left in the dust with technology is important, as there are tools coming out everyday to help businesses.

There are many plugins that would be useful for a business to have incorporated with a WordPress site.  One such plugin is the WPtouch plugin created by BraveNewCode Inc. which can be found at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wptouch/.This plugin formats a site for easier use through mobile devices such as the iPhone, Android, and Blackberry.  This type of plugin would be useful for a business to use due to the broader range of people that could use the site.  While these devices can support “PC” formatted web pages, it is often difficult to use, as well as hard to read.  This formatting would make the site much easier to navigate as well as give information.

Another useful plugin for a business to use is the Contact Form 7 plugin created by Takayuki Miyoshi which can be found at http://contactform7.com/.  This plugin is a basic contact form that any WordPress site is able to use.  This plugin gives the ability to customize the contact form, as well as very easily copy and paste into the page or post you want, and it is ready to go.  Every business that wants to succeed understands the need to listen to customers.  This contact form gives a clean, concise, and easy way for customers to contact a business directly on their site without having to go to a separate email website such as Gmail.
